PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland starter Kevin Baker struck out 11, Marty Luckenbach recorded his second save on the weekend and Kevin Wade drove in all three runs as the Pilots topped the Santa Clara Broncos 3-2 to clinch the West Coast Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Wade also homered during the win, his third this season.
Â
Wade's long fly came with the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out and the count 1-1, Wade turned on a fastball and deposited a solo shot over the fence in left-center field.
Â
That was all the offense Portland (6-21, 2-7 WCC) needed as Baker, Luckenbach and reliever Jordan Horak were masterful. Baker K'd a career-high 11 in 6.1 innings before being forced to come out of the game after turning an ankle trying to make a play on defense.
Â
That's where Horak took over, and with the bases loaded and the potential game-tying run 90 feet away in the top of the seventh, the junior lefty came through with a clutch strikeout, ending the inning and the jam.
Â
Horak also pitched the top of the eighth inning before Luckenbach took the mound to begin the final frame. Luckenbach easily retired all three batters he faced, which included a strikeout, to collect his third save of the year. He also closed out the Broncos (6-21, 2-4) on Friday night to help the Pilots begin the three-game series with a 7-5 win.
Â
Wade was responsible for Portland's RBI's in the bottom of the first and third innings, handing the Pilots a 2-0 lead. Matt Kelly began the home half of the first with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and ended up on third base when Beau Brundage grounded out. Chris Arpan then reached base after getting hit by a pitch, and Wade followed with a one-out grounder to second. Arpan was out on the play, but Wade did a good job of beating the throw to first, avoiding the double play and allowing Kelly to score the game's first runs.
Â
Wade's RBI in the third inning came on a ground out to the shortstop, which also scored Kelly.
Â
Santa Clara tied the score in the top of the sixth inning, but both runs were unearned as they came on a pair of Portland errors.
Â
Baker (2-4), Horak and Luckenbach combined to hold the Broncos to just four hits on the day.
Â
Santa Clara starter Michael Bono (0-4) takes the loss after going 6.0 innings. He scattered four hits, struck out five, walked one, and was charged with all three Portland runs. Brandon Buckley worked the final two innings on the hill.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a visit from the No. 1 Oregon State Beavers on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field.
