SANTA MONICA, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots beach volleyball team was overcome by Pacific in a 3-2 battle, and Saint Mary's 5-0 earlier today at the second WCC Beach Volleyball Championships held at Ocean Park Beach in Santa Monica, Calif.
The Pilots (3-7) started off the day facing off against No. 4 seed Pacific (4-10) in their first match of the championships. In the first match of the day, 5's pair Lauren Naatz and Monica Gajda won their dual in three sets to take the lead for the Pilots. 3's pairs Katie Barker and DJ Milovic then dominated their match to put the Pilots even with Pacific, leaving the last point to Portland 1's pair of Cali Thompson and Tani Stephens. Thompson and Stephens fought through three sets with the Tiger's for the final point, but Pacific prevailed in the last set to take the team score 3-2.
Later in the afternoon the Pilots then took on No.2 seeded Saint Mary's (18-9) in a non-advancing match. This was the second meeting for the Pilots and the Gaels this season, resulting with SMC taking another win against the Pilots, this time in five sets.
