PORTLAND, Ore. --- In a back-and-forth game it was only fitting that Gonzaga and Portland needed extra innings, and in the end it was the Bulldogs who prevailed 7-4 over the Pilots in 10 on Saturday night at Joe Etzel Field. The victory gives the Bulldogs two wins over the Pilots, with the finale of the three-game West Coast Conference series scheduled for tomorrow.
Â
The Pilots (8-29-1, 4-13 WCC) did well to rally after falling behind 4-1 after six-and-a-half innings. Trailing by three in the bottom of the seventh, Ryan Hoogerwerf sparked the comeback with a lead-off single. After two Pilots were retired, Tate Budnick kept the inning alive with a double down the left field line.
Â
Gonzaga then turned to their closer Wyatt Mills with two on and two out, and Matt Kelly greeted the new pitcher with a two-run single to right field, pulling the Pilots within one.
Â
An inning later the rally was complete when Jason Rosen, who had recently returned from an injury, sent a single up the middle, easily scoring Michael Forgione from second and evening the score 4-4.
Â
Neither team was able to break through in the ninth, but the Bulldogs, who had struggled at the plate to that point, found some offense in the 10th to reclaim the lead. Daniel Fredrickson collected the game-winning RBI with a base hit off of Portland reliever Marty Luckenbach, and Jeff Bohling provided the insurance with a two-run single.
Â
Gonzaga (23-14, 13-4 WCC) had four hits in that extra frame to double their hit total, and Mills did enough in the bottom of the 10th to seal the win.
Â
Cody Hawken went 3-for-4 for the Pilots, coming up a triple short of the cycle. He began the scoring and gave Portland an early lead when he left the yard with a solo home run in the bottom of the second. The homer is his team-best fifth of the year.
Â
But the Bulldogs tied it when they scored an unearned run in the sixth, without the benefit of a hit. GU then claimed their first lead of the night with a three-run seventh. Jake Veith hit a go-ahead, RBI double to left-center field, and Jake Roberts pushed the lead to 4-1 with a two-run double down the left field line.
Portland starter Grady Miller was solid on the hill, going 6.2 innings. He was charged with four runs, but only one was earned, and he scattered just four hits. He fanned five, and at one point he retired 13 straight Bulldogs.
Â
Jordan Horak struck out two and didn't allow a hit in 1.2 innings of relief, and Luckenbach (1-1) is saddled with the loss.
Â
Mills (2-1) gets the win for the Bulldogs, working 3.1 innings out of the bullpen. Starter Justin Vernia matched Miller's 6.2 innings, and he allowed three runs on eight hits.
Â
Sunday's finale is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
