LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- Tate Budnick gave Portland the lead with his second homer of the season, but the UNLV Rebels answered with five unanswered runs to overcome the Pilots 5-1 in a non-conference baseball game played on Tuesday night at Joe Etzel Field. Only two of UNLV's five runs were earned.
Â
After five innings of scoreless baseball, Budnick left the yard with a solo shot to left field to begin the top of the fifth inning. Budnick, who usually pitches or catches for the Pilots, started his first game of the year at second base.
Â
At the time it seemed the lead might hold as Portland (8-31-1) starter Corbin Powers was in control. Powers held the Rebels, who are one of the top offenses in the country, in-check for most of the night, but in the seventh the junior lefty ran into some trouble. The first two hitters of the frame reached base, giving the home team runners on the corners, which forced the Pilots to go to their bullpen.
Â
Reliever Jordan Horak fanned the first batter he faced, but the following hitter laid down a well-placed bunt, which scored a run and tied the game. The Rebels would then take the lead on a wild pitch before the final two runs of the four-run seventh scored on an error.
Â
UNLV (15-28) added an insurance run in the eighth en route to the win.
Â
Powers (0-5) was charged with two runs on six hits in 6.0 innings, and he struck out a career-high seven. Both Horak and fellow reliever Connor Knutson pitched an inning, with the run in the eighth going to Horak.
Â
UNLV's Blaze Bohall (2-4) takes the win after working a perfect inning of relief. He was one of three relievers to follow starter Corey Wilson, who held Portland to just the one run in 6.0 innings.
Â
The Pilots out-hit their opponent for the third straight game, and Budnick, Beau Brundage and Dutton Elske each finished with two hits.
Â
The Pilots end their stay in Vegas with a game at 2 p.m. on Wednesday against the Rebels.
