PORTLAND, Ore. --- With Portland trailing by one in the bottom of the ninth inning, Ryan Hoogerwerf crushed a ball deep over the left field fence to tie it with a solo homer, but the Loyola Marymount Lions scored three in the 10th to claim a 6-4 win over the Pilots on Saturday night at Joe Etzel Field. Matt Kelly added a solo home run in the bottom of the 10th for Portland, but the Lions held on to win and stay alive in the race for a West Coast Conference title alive.
Hoogerwerf forced extras with his team-best seventh home run to lead off the final frame, and the blast was so deep that the LMU left fielder didn't move from his spot. The Lions though had an answer, and it came in the form of a three-run homer by Jamey Smart, which came with two outs.
Kelly tried to spark a rally in the bottom of the 10th, but LMU (36-16, 19-7 WCC) reliever Codie Paiva minimized the damage to move to a perfect 6-0 on the year. He tossed 3.0 innings, striking out five.
The Lions took an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning, but their bats went silent from there as Portland starter Grady Miller settled into a groove. At one point the freshman lefty retired 11 straight hitters.
Meanwhile the Pilot (10-40-1, 5-12 WCC) offense climbed back into the game, with Kevin Wade driving in Portland's first run with his third RBI of the weekend. With two outs in the third, Kelly drew a walk before swiping second. Wade then hit one up the middle, bringing home Kelly to pull the Pilots within 3-1.
With the score the same in the bottom of the seventh, the Pilots again took advantage of a walk from LMU starter Cory Abbot. This time it was Michael Forgione to earn the free pass, before he stole second and ended up on third on a throwing error by the catcher. Jason Rosen then lifted a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to allow Forgione to tag and score, making it a 3-2 game in LMU's favor.
Miller was masterful in the no decision, working a career-high 9.0 innings. He K'd six and yielded eight hits. Tate Budnick (1-10) pitched the top of the 10th.
Abbott fanned 16 in 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
The Pilots and Lions next conclude the regular season with the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Pilots will honor their five seniors, Michael Forgione, Devin Kopas, Marty Luckenbach, Jason Rosen and Kevin Wade, with a pre-game ceremony.
