NEW ORLEANS, La. --- The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced their All-academic individuals and teams of the 2017 season earlier today, ranking the Portland women's track and field team No.5 nationally and awarding 11 Pilots individual academic honors.
"I am really proud of this team's academic success," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "Not many schools are at a high-level academically as well as athletically, but that's our mission at Portland. Our athletes put in an incredible amount of work and I appreciate all they do for our program."
360 NCAA Division I teams were honored for their academics by the USTFCCCA. There were 218 women's teams and 142 men's programs. The women's team maintained a team GPA of 3.61 during the 2017 season.
In addition to the team ranking, seniors Anna Farello, Parkes Kendrick, Anne Luijten, Grace McConnochie, and Kaylie Van Loo, along with Lauren LaRocco and Taryn Rawlings earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors on the women's side.
Though LaRocco redshirted her outdoor track season, she was named MPSF all-academic for her 12
th place finish in a blistering 5000m race at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this spring.
Farello, Kendrick, Luijten, and Van Loo each had strong outdoor season showings, qualifying for the West Regional meet in their respective events, the 1500m, 10,000m, and the javelin.
Rawlings started off the indoor season claiming the UP indoor record in the 1500m and finished up her outdoor season in the semifinal of the 1500m at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. McConnochie went on to finish 11
th in the 10,000m finals to earn second team All-American honors.
To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have at least finished the regular indoor season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships, including preliminary rounds.
On the men's side, seniors Tim Ball, Alex Dillard, Brady Johnson, and sophomore Noah Schutte were also awarded All-Academic honors.
Ball, Dillard, and Johnson all competed in the 10,000m at the outdoor West Preliminary Championships. Schutte competed in the finals of the 3000m Steeplechase to finish 12
th earning second team All-American honors.
