Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Boise State Broncos edged the Portland Pilots 1-0 on Sunday afternoon to conclude the Nike Invitational at Merlo Field. The game was evenly played as both teams exchanged shots, and Portland was denied by the post at the end of the first half.
Â
It was Taryn Ries who ran onto a ball in space on a counter during the final seconds of that first half. The freshman somehow got a shot off with her left foot from a tight angle that had the Boise State keeper beat. But the shot from about 15 yards out hit the post and dropped straight into the arms of Tara Fisher as the clock ran out, and the two teams entered the locker room scoreless.
Â
It was more of the same in the second half as both teams created opportunities. In the 55th minute, UP freshman Ellie Winkelmann had possession near the top of the 18 before hitting a shot just high of the cross bar as the game remained tied 0-0.
Â
In the 70th minute, Boise State's (4-3-1) Raimee Sherle scored the day's only goal when she received a pass from Aubree Chatterton, took a couple of touches across the top of the box, and hit a well-placed shot inside the left post. Her third goal of the year gave the visitors the 1-0 lead, and Chatterton claims the assist.
Â
From there the Pilots (2-6-0) pieced together some decent possession as the home side searched for the equalizer. In the 82nd minute, Kimberly Hazlett found Ries, who then sent a nice pass into the right side of the box to Ariel Viera, who tried to go top shelf. But the shot off the foot of the redshirt-senior was just high of the crossbar.
Â
Kaycie Young then took a crack at goal on free kick moments later. She hit a well-struck ball looking for that upper 90, but the attempt was wide by a few inches.
Â
During the final minute, the Pilots sent a handful of dangerous balls into the area, but were unable to connect with a final touch.
Â
The game was the first ever between the two Pacific Northwest programs.
Â
The Pilots remain at home later this week when they welcome the Oregon State Beavers to Merlo Field on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on CSN Northwest.
