PORTLAND, Ore. --- After 89 minutes of scoreless soccer, Portland redshirt-junior Kaycie Young stepped to the spot and hammered a PK into the top shelf to hand the Pilots a 1-0 win over the Oregon State Beavers on Friday night at Merlo Field. The goal is the first career game-winner for Young.
It came after the Pilots (3-6-0) were awarded the penalty after Taryn Ries was tackled from behind inside the 18. Maddie Dieker had played a ball into Ries, and the freshman did the rest, creating some space from the defender with a deft move towards the end line.
The PK came with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation, and the Pilots would hold on from there.
It's the second shutout of the year for Portland, and the ninth in the career of junior goalkeeper Rachel Lusby. Lusby was solid in goal, finishing with a pair of saves on the night. Her backline was stellar as well, as the Pilots did well to limit Oregon State's (3-3-2) opportunities, forcing the Beavers into low percentage shots all night long.
"It was awesome to see Kaycie step up with only seconds remaining in the game and bury the PK without a doubt," said Portland head coach Garrett Smith. "It was great to see our team defense stay strong and get the shutout tonight and give us a chance to win!"
Both teams created chances in the first half, and in the seventh minute a free kick from Young found the head of Kendra Steele in the area. Steele's header was just wide.
At the other end of the field, the Beavs hit the Portland woodwork twice, with Paula Leblic bouncing a shot off the left post in the 12th minute. In the 32nd minute, her teammate Kayla Latham drove a shot off the cross bar as the two sides entered the half scoreless.
Early in the second half, Ries hit a shot that forced OSU's Bella Geist into making a diving stop, deflecting the ball out for a Portland corner. The Pilots couldn't capitalize on the two ensuing corner kicks, and the two teams remained tied.
In the 62nd minute, Geist made another big-time save on a point-blank shot from Ellie Walker, who fought her way through traffic to get to a ball near the top of the six-yard box.
Ries hit a shot in the in the 88th minute that was blocked, before the Pilots took advantage of the PK in the final minute.
"It was a great night for our team vs. an organized and hard-working OSU team," added Smith. "It was great to see some of our young players starting to create some quality chance and showing some composure in the final third and applying some pressure to the opposition's defense."
Next up for the Pilots is a trip to Seattle, Wash., for their final non-conference match of the year on Friday against the Seattle Redhawks. Kickoff at Championship Field is set for 7 p.m.
