PORLTAND, Ore. --- The Oregon State Beavers overcame the Portland Pilots in a four-set battle to conclude the North Harbour Marriott Challenge Saturday evening at the Chiles Center. The Beavers take their sixth win of the season with set scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-17.
Â
Though the Pilots (5-1) claimed the first point to start the match, Oregon State (6-0) responded with a five-point run led by Mary-Kate Marshall. Portland junior Reghan Pukis and freshman Liz Reich were able to disrupt OSU's momentum with kills, but the Beavers continued to push forward to bring the match to 11-4. Pukis then produced a kill to prompt a four-point run for the Pilots, forcing OSU to attempt to contain the Pilots. Pukis continued to record kills, bringing Portland within one point. Portland then tied it 18-18, and senior Sarah Savoca gave the first lead of the match to the Pilots with a strong kill. OSU responded by taking back the lead and surging towards set point. Lanesha Reagan clinched the set 25-21 with the final kill.
Â
Portland started the second set ahead early 3-1, before Oregon State battled back to even the score at 6-6. Pukis registering back-to-back kills widened the gap for Portland to make it 12-9 in the home team's favor, but Marshall created another run to put the Beavers ahead 15-12. Both teams fought through long points, but OSU eventually claimed a 22-19 lead. Pukis again recorded a crucial kill, to make it 22-21, forcing Oregon State to take a time out. Coming out of the break, the Beavers continued their defensive performance, so that Marshall could finish the set 25-23 with the final kill.
Â
Troutman recorded two kills early in the third set, along with a kill and ace from Savoca to take a 10-5 lead. The Beavers climbed back into the set after a timeout led by kills from Marshall, and a block from Reagan to take back the lead. Pukis produced two more kills to regain the lead for the Pilots at 21-19, before Marshall responded with two kills of her own to level the score again. Redshirt-freshman Katie Barker then hit a well-placed ace and the Pilots held strong on defense to win the set 25-23.
Â
OSU began the fourth set with a five-point run, before Troutman and Thompson would break up the momentum with kills. The Beavers held strong and increased their lead to 18-7, until Troutman produced a kill and a block with Barker to make it 20-13 for the Beavers. But the Beavers held on to win the set and the match.
Â
Pukis matched a season-high with 22 kills, while Troutman registered a double-double with 20 kills and 19 digs. Sophomore Cali Thompson also produced a double-double with 46 assists and 16 digs.
Â
Marshall, who was named tournament MVP, led three Beavers in double-digit kills with 19.
