PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior Hannah Troutman registered her third straight double-double and freshman Kassidy Naone collected a career-high nine kills as the Pilots swept the Saint Mary's Gaels 3-0 in a West Coast Conference volleyball match played on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. The Pilots claimed the match with set scores of 25-20, 25-22, and 25-21.
Â
The win improves the Pilots to 10-4 on the year, while evening their WCC mark to 1-1. Saint Mary's drops to 4-8 and 0-2 in the conference.
Â
The Gaels took the first few points of the first set, but the Pilots responded to jump ahead 13-7. Troutman produced two kills during the outburst, and her solo block capped a 4-0 run to give the Pilots the six-point lead. The lead was still six moments later when the Gaels made a late comeback, pulling within 20-18 with the help of a kill from Alex O'Sullivan and an ace by Mary Hernandez.
Â
The Pilots re-grouped from there and would get to set-point after kills by redshirt-freshman Izzy Guzik and Troutman. An attacking error by the Gaels would seal the set for the home team. Troutman recorded seven kills during the opening game.Â
Saint Mary's recovered to surge in front of the second set 13-9, but the Pilots answered with five straight points, which was fueled by two kills from Troutman. The run continued with the help of a kill from freshman Liz Reich as the Pilots were soon ahead by four.
Â
Naone, sophomore Katie Barker and Guzik produced kills down the stretch to help the Pilots get to set point, and Guzik made it a 2-0 match with a set-clinching kill.
Â
The Pilots continued their momentum in the third game and soon led by a cozy 8-3 margin. The Gaels tried to mount a comeback, but the Pilots refused to falter, and a kill by Troutman handed Portland the straight-set win.
Â
Troutman finished with a match-high 19 kills, to go along with 12 digs. Senior libero Morgan Robinson led the team with 18 digs, while sophomore setter Cali Thompson also had a double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs.Â
