SALEM, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's cross country teams concluded a busy weekend of competition at the Charles Bowles Invitational on Saturday morning. While only three women competed for the Portland women, the men's team sent eight men who took the overall team title.

"I'm very proud of the guys for getting the victory today," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "Great team effort from top to bottom."

Freshman Henry Hayes led the Pilots with a fifth-place finish in 25:14.1 with Simon Grannetia just behind him in seventh (25:15.5).

On the women's side freshmen Emily Bechen and Alexandra Newsom, along with sophomore Karli Piaia competed for Portland. Bechen led the way for the Pilots in the 5k finishing in 19:09.3, followed by Piaia in 19:27.3 and Newsom in 20:00.6

"We only had three women at Willamette, but they all ran hard and competed well," said women's head coach Ian Solof.

The Portland men will compete next at the Nuttycombe Invitational on Oct. 13 in Wisconsin, while the women will compete next on Oct. 14 at the NCAA Pre-National meet. Â
