STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots volleyball team won their first match at the Alex G. Spanos Center in program history, sweeping the Pacific Tigers in three sets on Thursday night. The Pilots won in three sets, winning 25-19, 25-17, and 25-22.
The Pilots (15-4, 3-4 WCC) have not lost a set in their last three matches, going a perfect 9-0 that included sweeps over San Francisco and Santa Clara. The Pacific Tigers (6-12, 1-6) close out their weekend against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Oct. 13
th.
"I thought we executed at a very high level for two sets," head coach Jeff Baxter said after the match. "Pacific battled the whole match. We're excited to upgrade some things in practice tomorrow."
Senior Reghan Pukis once again led the Pilots in kills, having 11 total and added two blocks. Close behind her in the kill column were sophomores Liz Reich and Izzy Guzik with 10 and seven, respectively. Junior Cali Thompson served 37 assists, while junior Shayla Hoeft had seven blocks and five kills.
The Pilots began the first set on top, going on an early 5-0 run to push their lead to 6-3. Guzik was critical in the beginning of the first set, grabbing three early kills and halting any Tiger runs to keep the Pilots in command. Despite a few Pacific runs, the Pilots remained in control throughout the set, and capped it off with an ace by Lauren Naatz to win it, 25-19.
Looking to regain momentum, the Tigers took an early lead to begin the second set, but were unable to keep hold of it as the Pilots came back and extended their lead to 17-9. Pukis and Reich led the way during the second set, each having four kills. The Tigers would remain competitive, but it would not be enough to complete the comeback as the Pilots would go on to take the second set, 25-17.
Determined to complete the sweep, the Pilots held strong to hold off the Tigers, as both teams held the lead late into the third set. A service ace by Tigers freshman Riley Ramsey gave them the lead at 20-19, but was shortly taken away by the Pilots as they went on a 6-3 run led by three of Pukis' 11 kills to finish the third set, winning 25-22.
The Pilots finish their road trip at Saint Mary's, playing at the McKeon Pavilion on Saturday, Oct 13
th at noon.
