PORTLAND, Ore. --- Four different Pilots found the back of the net and goalkeeper Kienan Weekes needed to make just one save as No. 7 Portland rolled to a commanding 4-0 win over the Loyola Marymount Lions in a West Coast Conference men's soccer game played on Friday night at Merlo Field. The win extends Portland's unbeaten streak to begin the season to 12 games.
Â
Portland (10-0-2, 2-0-0 WCC) scored one goal before the half and three after the break, with the first coming from Gio Magana-Rivera in the 16th minute. Magana-Rivera received a pass from Greg Tracey near the top of the box, faked a left-footed shot to cut back to his right, and buried a stellar hit into the top of the net to stun the LMU keeper. Both Tracey and Malcolm Dixon earned an assist on the goal, which is Magana-Rivera's second on the year.
Â
Moments later the Pilots nearly capitalized on a set piece when Magana-Rivera sent a ball towards the top of the area. That's where Tristan Weber put a well-struck shot on-target, but goalkeeper Paul Lewis was there with a diving save, deflecting the ball wide.
Â
Still leading 1-0 in the 52nd minute, the Pilots took advantage of an error by the Lions (4-8-0, 1-1-0 WCC) to add to their edge on the scoreboard. Lewis sent a goal kick to his defender, who played it back to the keeper. The touch from Lewis then got away from him, and Alejandro Pereira was there to put the ball away with his second goal of the year.
Â
The lead would grow when R.J. Stretch provided a composed finishing touch on a brilliant ball sent in by Weber in the 72nd minute. From left of the 18, Weber hit a perfectly placed service far post, where Stretch tapped it in. It's his second goal of the fall, and Weber collects his second assist.
Â
Luke Hendel and Jason Manning combined on a give-and-go for Portland's fourth on the night, with Manning sending a pass back across the top of the six-yard box. Hendel's touch re-directed the ball into the corner of the net, and Portland had sealed the win. It's Hendel's second goal this fall, while Manning claims his first career point.
Â
Portland dominated possession and was solid on defense all night long, limiting LMU's chances. The Lions attempted just five shots, with most of them coming from distance.
Â
At 10-0-2, the Pilots match Portland's 1989 team for the second best start to a season in program history. The win is the fourth clean sheet recorded by the Pilots this year, and the 12-match unbeaten string is the longest for the program since a 14-game streak in 1995.
Â
The Pilots next welcome the San Diego Toreros to Merlo Field for a WCC match on Sunday, with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m.
