SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Portland Pilots volleyball team won their only match of the weekend, sweeping the Gonzaga Bulldogs in three sets on Saturday afternoon. The Pilots won in three sets, winning 25-21, 25-19, and 25-22.
The Pilots (16-5, 4-5 WCC) recorded their 10th sweep of the season, including their fourth within the WCC. Next weekend, Gonzaga (6-14, 3-6) will host San Diego and No. 1 BYU.
"It was exciting to see the team execute so many things we worked on in practice this week," head coach Jeff Baxter said after the match. "(We're) looking forward to a great week of practice back on the bluff".
Junior Katie Barker led the Pilots in kills (11), blocks (three), service aces (three), and points (16.5). Sophomore Izzy Guzik recorded a double-double, having 10 kills with a .500 hitting percentage and 10 digs, while junior Cali Thompson had 39 assists and eight digs.
The Bulldogs were in the lead for the majority of the first set, and weathered through multiple Pilot runs to hold the lead at 18-16. The Pilots would answer with a 6-0 run, led by three kills by Guzik, to take the lead at 22-18. A kill by Shayla Hoeft would end the set shortly afterwards, the Pilots taking it 25-21.
The Pilots would continue their impressive play into the second set, going on an early 7-2 run to push their lead to 10-5. The Bulldogs would refuse to go without a fight, going on a 4-2 run featuring two of GU's Sarah Penner's four kills to cut the Pilots lead to 12-9. Not to be outdone, the Pilots went on a 7-4 run led by two kills by Thompson to extend their lead to 19-13, and would go on to take the second set at 25-19.
Seeking the sweep, The Pilots would go on an 8-1 run led by two service aces and a kill by Barker to push their early lead to 13-5. Despite a few runs by the Bulldogs to remain in the set, the Pilots would finish the match and secure the sweep, winning the third set 25-17.
The Pilots return to the Chiles Center next week, hosting No. 1 BYU (19-0, 9-0) on Thursday, Oct. 25th at 7:00 PM, and San Diego (11-9, 8-2) on Saturday, Oct. 27
th at noon.
