SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- Portland freshmen Greg Tracey and Jake Arteaga both found the back of the net and senior goalkeeper Kienan Weekes provided four saves as the No. 7 Pilots shutout the Santa Clara Broncos 2-0 in a West Coast Conference men's soccer game played on Sunday night at Stevens Stadium. It's the fifth clean sheet this season for the Pilots, while Weekes collects his fourth solo shutout.
Â
"The boys responded exactly the way we knew they would tonight," Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "We have had to overcome so much adversity the last three games and I couldn't be more proud of our team for their unity and commitment. I thought we came out the aggressors tonight and scored two great goals. We bounced back from very tough game Friday on a field that presented a lot of challenges. Keeping a clean sheet was a major point of emphasis and the entire team was dialed in to our game plan. We now will recover and prepare for a very good Pacific team."
The Pilots (11-1-3, 3-1-1 WCC) dominated possession early, which led to a couple of quality opportunities. Alejandro Pereira hit one just wide in the second minute, and he sent a header towards the frame moments later that was outside of the left post.
Â
Then in the 19th minute, Tracey connected for a world-class goal to hand the visitors the 1-0 lead. A loose ball fell to the feet of the freshman midfielder, and he buried a shot into the right corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
Â
The game remained 1-nil Pilots until Arteaga made a run into the 18 and was on the end of a cross from R.J. Stretch, another Portland freshman. Arteaga's first goal of the year handed the Pilots the 2-0 edge, which they would take into the locker room at the half.
Â
The Broncos (5-9-1, 1-4-0 WCC) had a handful of opportunities in the second half, but the Portland defense was solid, and Weekes was able to deny a couple of crosses sent into the area.
Â
At the other end of the pitch, Santa Clara's keeper Dakota Havlick made a clutch save on a shot from point-blank range off the foot of Pereira, and he came through with a stop on a PK from the Pilots in the 87th minute.
Â
In the end, the Pilots would hold on for the shutout as they rebounded from Friday night's loss at San Francisco.
Â
The Pilots remain on the road next week when they travel to Stockton, Calif., to face the Pacific Tigers on Saturday night. Portland's last road game of the season is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
