OGDEN, Utah --- Portland senior Julie Spencer claims her second straight double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds and freshman Haylee Andrews scored 23 points as the Pilots won their second straight game on the road, defeating the Weber State Wildcats 89-73 on Monday evening at the Dee Events Center. Senior Darian Slaga also had a double-double for the Pilots, the first of her career, with 11 points and 10 boards.
Â
Portland, who open the season 2-0, shot 49.2 percent from the field, which included 10 three-pointers. Spencer connected on four from beyond the three-point arc out of six attempts, while Andrews was 3-for-5 from deep.
Â
The Pilots led for almost the entire game, but early in the fourth quarter an 8-0 run by the Wildcats (1-1) allowed them to climb within 66-63 with 7:20 remaining. Spencer ended the run with a three-pointer for the Pilots, and moments later the lead was back to 10 points as Josie Matz converted a fast break lay-up.
Â
From there the Wildcats tried to hang around, but a late Maddie Muhlheim three and some stifling defense by the Pilots sealed the win.
Â
It's the 10th career double-double for Spencer, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds during Portland's season-opening win at Utah Valley on Saturday. Andrews, a guard out of Australia in her first year with the Pilots, continues her torrid start as she's averaging a team-best 21.0 points after two games. She also had six assists and five boards against the Wildcats.
Â
The 10 rebounds match a career-best for Slaga, and junior Kate Andersen was the fourth Pilot to score in double figures, matching Slaga with 11 points. Muhlheim just missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds.
Â
The Pilots opened the game perfect from the field as they jumped out to an early 9-4 lead after Spencer connected on a jumper. Moments later after the Wildcats had tied the score, a steal by Matz led to a fast-break lay-up by Andrews, which capped a quick 6-0 run for the Pilots that made the score 17-11.
Â
Portland would carry their lead into the second quarter, and after a put-back from Jayce Gorzeman on an offensive rebound, the Pilots were on top 21-18. From there the Wildcats scored four straight to produce their first lead of the night.
Â
Back-to-back three-pointers from Spencer and Slaga then sparked a run for the Pilots, and a Spencer lay-up pushed the Pilots back in front. Portland would enter the locker room with a 39-35 edge, and Spencer led all scorers at the break with 14 points.
Â
Andrews knocked down a shot from deep to open the third quarter, which at the time handed the Pilots their largest lead. Weber State refused to go away, but the Pilots used a 9-1 run to end the period to stretch their advantage to 64-55, which was capped by a Spencer three to beat the buzzer. Spencer followed that with a lay-up to begin the fourth, and Portland was up by double digits for the first time.
Â
Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman led the Wildcats with 23 points, and Kayla Watkins added 21 as Weber State combined to shoot 38.0 percent. Dominique Williams corralled a team-best 12 boards, but the Pilots won the battle of the glass 47-38.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a trip to Hawai'i, where they'll face Hawai'i and Arizona on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
