HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Portland remained unbeaten with a 72-65 victory over Hawai'i on Friday in the first game of the Bank of Hawai'i Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Pilot backcourt of freshman Haylee Andrews, sophomore Maddie Muhlheim and senior Darian Slaga combined to score 44 points and Portland held the Rainbow Wahine to 36 percent shooting from the field in the victory.
The Pilots (3-0) have won three straight road games to open the year for the first time since the 2010-11 season and opened with three consecutive wins for the second year in a row.
Andrews continued the stellar start to her collegiate career with 17 points, including 14 in the second half. The Townsville, Australia native made numerous clutch plays down the stretch to seal the win. She added three rebounds, three assists and three steals in 37 minutes.
Slaga also scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Muhlheim chipped in 10 points, including four key free throws late in regulation.
The game featured eight ties and seven lead changes as neither side was to go ahead by double digits. A three-pointer by Andrews late in the third quarter gave Portland a 47-44 lead. The Pilots opened the fourth period with a 6-0 run highlighted by a Slaga three-pointer and Andrews fast break layup to take a 54-46 lead.
The Rainbow Wahine (0-4) responded and made it a one possession game on a Rachel Odumu layup cutting the deficit to 61-58 with 2:51 remaining. Portland would hit 9-of-10 free throws over the next two minutes to separate and close out the win.
The Pilots shot 49 percent from the field and made 6-of-13 three-pointers in the game.
Leah Salanoa scored a game-high 19 points to lead three Hawai'i players in double figures.
Portland will conclude its trip to Hawai'i on Sunday against Arizona with a 2 p.m. (PT) tip-off. A victory would give the Pilots their first 4-0 start since the 2010-11 season.
