WESTWOOD, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots lost in four sets at the Wooden Center on Saturday afternoon, losing a competitive match against the Pepperdine Waves. The Pilots fell to set scores of 23-25, 25-17, 17-25, and 23-25.
Juniors Izzy Guzik and Shayla Hoeft led the Pilots in kills, with both players having 14. Junior Cali Thompson had a double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs, while sophomore libero Carey Williams had 17 digs and six assists.
Pepperdine (19-8, WCC 12-4) began the match by going on an 11-4 run, forcing the Pilots (18-11, 6-11) to take an early timeout. It took time for the Pilots to reassert themselves in the first set, but would rally late by going on a 6-1 featuring three straight kills by Guzik to make it a one-point set at 23-24. The Waves would take the next point, winning the first set at 25-23.
The Pilots would begin the second set on a tear of their own, forcing the Waves to take an early timeout after Portland opened the set to a 11-6 lead. The Pilots would remain in the driver's seat the rest of the way, taking the second set at 25-17.
In a crucial third set, the Pilots and Waves would exchange points for the majority of the set, with the Waves separating themselves first by going on a 5-0 run to take the lead and pushing it to 18-13. They would go on to take their second set in a row, the score 25-17 Waves.
The Waves would once again begin a set on a roll, forcing the Pilots to take an early timeout as Pepperdine began the fourth set on a 10-3 run. Coming out of the timeout, the Pilots would respond with a 10-2 run to take the lead at 13-12, featuring five kills by Hoeft, three of which came in a row. The set would come down to the wire, with junior Katie Barker having her 13
th kill of the day to make the score 23-23 late. Pepperdine junior Tarah Wylie would finish the match herself, having a kill and a solo block to take the set at 25-23.
Next week, the Pilots will host their Senior Night against the Gonzaga Bulldogs at the Chiles Center on Tuesday, November 20
th at 7:00 PM.
