PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland men's basketball team defeated Westmont in a 94-80 exhibition shootout on Saturday at the Chiles Center. Josh McSwiggan scored a game-high 24 points to lead four Pilots in double figures, while sophomore point guard Marcus Shaver Jr. added a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Westmont, a perennial NAIA Tournament contender, drilled 14 three-pointers to keep the game interesting. The Warriors defeated Portland Bible by a 110-79 margin on Friday in their season-opener.
Junior Franklin Porter finished with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Pilots, while sophomore Malcolm Porter added 12 points off the bench.
McSwiggan erupted with 13 points in the first half as the Pilots built a double-digit lead, but the Warriors closed the half with a three-point buzzer beater by Olisa Nwachie to cut the deficit to 42-39.
Portland blitzed Westmont with a 17-0 run to open the second half as the Pilots were able to get steals and turn defense into offense. The lead blossomed to as much as 23 points early in the period, but the Warriors battled and were able to pull within 10 points twice before Portland closed it out.
Portland shot 46 percent overall and made 10-of-28 three-pointers. The Pilots made 26-of-39 free throws, including a perfect 12-of-12 at the stripe by Shaver.
Portland used its size to gain a 47-30 rebounding margin and 10-2 edge in second chance points. The Pilots were also effective in transition with a 21-6 advantage in fast break points.
Five Warriors finished in double figures led by 19 points off the bench from Gyse Hulsebosch.
The Pilots will open the regular season on Tuesday against Multnomah at the Chiles Center with a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Portland then heads to the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii to face the host Warriors and North Texas on November 9-10.
