HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The Portland men's basketball team dropped an 82-64 decision to the Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors on Friday night in day one of the Rainbow Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center. Sophomore point guard Marcus Shaver Jr. led the Pilots (1-1) with 19 points.
Sophomore Tahirou Diabate added 12 points in 16 minutes off the bench, while redshirt junior Josh McSwiggan finished with 11 points.
Zigmars Raimo led five Rainbow Warriors (1-0) in double figures with 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Portland trailed by just two at the half, but the Rainbow Warriors capitalized on five early turnovers in the second half during a 17-3 run for a 53-37 lead. Hawai'i led by as much as 19 points before the Pilots cut the deficit to 69-58 with 3:52 remaining, but that was as close Portland would get.
The Rainbow Warriors shot 55 percent in the second half and 47 percent overall. UH made 11-of-31 three-pointers and 9-of-14 free throws. Portland struggled to 41 percent overall and just 5-of-17 from three-point range. The Pilots finished 25-of-34 at the free throw line.
Hawai'i gained a 15-3 edge in second chance points after out-rebounding the Pilots by a 36-28 margin. UH also converted 14 Portland turnovers into an 18-11 edge in points off of turnovers.
The Pilots jumped out to an early 13-5 lead to open the game after a Shaver Jr. three-point and steal and layup by JoJo Walker. The Rainbow Warriors rode the energy off the bench of Samuta Avea who scored six straight points to spark an 11-2 run to re-take the lead.
Hawaii led 34-24, but Portland responded with a 10-0 run as Shaver Jr. converted a dunk off a steal and then converted another breakaway layup to tie the game. Shaver Jr. scored 12 first-half points as Portland trailed 36-34 at the break.
Portland will conclude its trip to Hawai'i with a Saturday night meeting against North Texas (2-0). The Mean Green opened the Rainbow Classic with an 93-48 win against Humboldt State on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (PT) with live radio coverage beginning at 6 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT).
