FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton senior backcourt of Kyle Allman Jr. and Khalil Ahmad combined for 47 points as the Titans posted a 79-64 victory over the Portland Pilots on Saturday night at Titan Gym.
Fullerton outrebounded Portland by a 44-22 margin and improved to 4-9 overall having played one of the most difficult schedules in the nation. The Pilots conclude non-conference play with a 7-8 record.
Sophomore guard Marcus Shaver Jr. led Portland with 17 points, while sophomore forward Jacob Tryon added a season-high 11 points off the bench.
Allman Jr. and Ahmad entered the contest averaging 36 points per game and nearly reached that by halftime. Allman Jr. buried five first half three-pointers and had 20 in the period. He finished with a game-high 26 points, while Ahmad added 21.
The Titans came out firing and made their first five field goal attempts and pushed to a 22-12 lead. Portland's bench provided a boost as Malcolm Porter and Jacob Tryon each hit a pair of baskets and then Franklin Porter made a driving layup to give the Pilots a 34-33 lead, but the Titans responded with a 9-0 run capped by an Allman Jr. three and steal and dunk by Ahmad for a 46-36 halftime advantage.
Fullerton extended the run after the half and would lead by as much as 17 points. Portland was unable to cut the deficit back to single digits down the stretch.
The Titans gained a 12-4 edge in second chance points and 14-0 margin in fast break points. The Pilots shot 43 percent overall compared to 44 percent for Cal State Fullerton, but Portland struggled at the foul line (14-22) while the Titans converted 18-of-23.
Portland now shifts to its West Coast Conference schedule with the league opener next Saturday at Loyola Marymount. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Gersten Pavilion.
