PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore guards JoJo Walker and Marcus Shaver Jr. combined for 43 points and freshman center Hugh Hogland added a career-high 13 off the bench as the Portland Pilots defeated Sacramento State 76-67 Saturday night at the Chiles Center.
The victory ended a three-game losing streak for the Pilots (6-5) and snapped the best start in Division I program history for the Hornets (4-2).
Walker drained 5-of-7 three-pointers and finished with 22 points, three rebounds and four assists. It marks his third 20-point game of the season. Shaver Jr. finished an efficient 5-of-9 from the field and 10-for-12 at the free throw line for 21 points. He added five rebounds and three assists.
Hogland was dominant in the post offensively as he made 6-of-9 from the field and finished five points better than his previous season high. He also grabbed five rebounds in 19 minutes of work.
The Pilots shot a season-best 57 percent as a team from the field and were 8-of-12 from three-point range. Portland held the Hornets to 35 percent from the field and also gained a 39-34 rebounding advantage.
The first half featured five ties and 11 lead changes as neither team led by more than four points. Portland had a 30-29 halftime lead and opened the second period with a 14-5 run to push the margin to double digits.
Shaver Jr. buried a three-pointer to open the half and sophomore forward Tahirou Diabate scored six points during the spurt. Portland's lead grew to as much as 14 late as Sacramento State got no closer than eight points down the stretch.
Joshua Patton recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Hornets, while Marcus Graves added 19 points.
Portland continues its four-game homestand next Saturday against Grambling State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Chiles Center.
