LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The No. 13 UCLA Bruins topped the Portland Pilots 15-3 in the finale of the three-game, season-opening series on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Cody Hawken and Daniel Lopez both homered for the Pilots.
Â
Much like Friday and Saturday, the Bruins (3-0) jumped ahead of the Pilots (0-3) on Sunday with some early offense. This time the Bruins scored one run in both the first and second innings before taking control of the game with a five-run third. In that third frame, Kyle Cuellar, Jeremy Ydens, and Ryan Kreidler each produced RBI singles. Another run scored on a double play, and the fourth run was unearned.
Â
The Pilots got one back in the top of the fourth when Hawken led off the inning with a solo home run, his first homer of the season.
Â
But the Bruins responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning before putting up another three-spot in the fifth.
Â
Lopez's home run, his first of the year, came in the top of the ninth inning with Collin Runge on base.
Â
Freshman right-hander Eli Morse (0-1) takes the loss in his collegiate debut with the Pilots. He was followed by Camden Muller, Tate Budnick, and Connor White out of the Portland bullpen.
Â
The Bruins received their third straight solid start on the mound with freshman Zach Pettway (1-0) earning his first career win. The right-hander yielded only three hits in 5.0 winnings, he didn't issue a walk, and he struck out two. His only blemish was the Hawken's homer.
Â
Three Bruin relievers followed Pettway's exit, with Lopez's home run coming against Holden Powell.
Â
Lopez, Beau Brundage, and Chad Stevens each had a pair of hits for the Pilots, who combined for nine hits on the day.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host the Oregon Ducks on Wednesday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field. The game with the Ducks begins a string of nine straight home games for the Pilots.
