LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 4 UCLA Bruins were pushed by Portland, but came away with a 7-0 sweep of the Pilots Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Pilots (5-5, 0-1 WCC) were without top singles player Michail Pervolarakis for the third straight match due to injury. Pervolarakis is ranked No. 36 in this week's ITA singles rankings.
Despite playing a top five opponent and competing outdoors for the first time this spring, the Pilots were up to the challenge.
The doubles tandem of senior Alex Wallace and freshman Tom Hann pulled out a 6-4 victory at the No. 3 position in the first match playing with each other this spring. The Bruins (12-2) were able to secure the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 1 and 6-4 victory at No. 2.
Senior Pierre Garcia forced No. 60-ranked Logan Staggs to three sets at No. 2 singles. Garcia won the first set in a tiebreaker, but Staggs won 6-1 in the second and pulled out the 6-4 win in the third set.
Hann dropped his first set against Austin Rapp at No. 5 singles, but forced a third set with a 7-5 win in the second. Rapp was able to take the point with a 6-4 win in the third.
Senior Mathieu Garcia performed well at the No. 1 singles position against No. 102 Evan Zhu, who was able to claim a 6-4, 6-4 win.
Junior Carlos donat fell 6-1, 7-6 to Connor Hance at No. 4, while Jamie Fisher came up short against Ben Goldberg in straight sets at No. 6.
"We actually played great today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said, "Saying that when you sounds lose 7-0 may sound weird, but Alex and Tom getting a doubles win as first time partners was great. Tom was up a break in the third before falling to a very solid player. Pierre battled deep into a third and Mathieu and Carlos both had chances to get into third sets. Playing outdoors for the first time against the No. 4 team in the country, I think we did everything within our control to create a battle. I was proud of our effort tonight."
The Pilots will return home to host Gonzaga on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live video and point-by-point scoring will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
