PORTLAND, Ore. --- Freshman guard Marcus Shaver Jr. was named the U.S Bank Student-Athlete of the Month after he reached double figures scoring in seven of eight games in January and led the Pilots in scoring at 12.5 points per game during the month. He recorded 16 points in both games against nationally ranked Gonzaga. Shaver Jr. finished with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists in a loss at No. 16 Saint Mary's.
Despite scoring just six points at San Diego on Jan. 18, he collected an important steal in the closing seconds and made a pair of free throws to secure the road win. Shaver Jr. then recorded 13 points, three rebounds and three assists two nights later as the Pilots completed the road sweep with a win at Loyola Marymount. The Phoenix, Ariz. native shot 83 percent from the free throw line and had nine steals in the month to lead the Pilots.
