SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland point guard Joel Foxwell was named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week after leading the Pilots to a 3-0 start, the league office announced on Monday. Foxwell averaged 17.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in the team's three victories.
The Melbourne, Australia native debuted with 18 points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals in a 120-83 win against Willamette on Monday.
He followed that performance with his first career double-double if 12 points and 10 assists to go along with six rebounds in Portland's 83-74 win against Arkansas Pine Bluff on Thursday.
Foxwell capped the week by carrying the Pilots to a 67-63 win against UC Davis on Sunday afternoon. He had a game-high 23 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. Foxwell drilled five important three-pointers at key moments throughout the game.
Foxwell shot 44 percent overall from the field, 33 percent from three-point range and 86 percent at the foul line for the week.
Oregon State's Josiah Lake II was named the overall WCC Player of the Week after leading the Beavers to a pair of wins and averaging 16.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.
The Pilots (3-0) will now prepare for their first road game of the season scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15 at Wyoming (2-0). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (PT) with live coverage links available at
