PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland men's tennis team won its third straight match and 22nd consecutive home contest with a 6-1 victory over Idaho on Friday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. Portland improves to 3-3 this spring, while the Vandals fall to 0-3.
Portland ran a new doubles lineup out with senior Michail Pervolarakis and freshman Tom Hann teaming up at the No. 2 position. They won by a 6-1 margin and then Carlos Donat and Jamie Fisher clinched with a 6-3 win at No. 3 to improve to 3-0 this spring together.
The Pilots wasted little time in clinching with straight set wins at the top three positions. No. 21-ranked Pervolarakis improved to 5-0 this spring at the top of the lineup with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Mark Kovacs. Mathieu Garcia defeated Carlos Longhi Neto 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and then Pierre Garcia cruised by a 6-2, 6-4 margin against Guilherme Scarpelli.
"We played really well today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Mike and Tom had never played together and just clicked really well to help us take the doubles point. We road that momentum heavy into the top three singles positions. Those guys just steamrolled through their first sets and all went on and won in straight sets."
Donat then beat Felipe Fonseca comfortably at No. 4 and Hann easily won the first set before Estaban Santibanez was forced to retire trailing 2-0 in the second set at No. 5.
Lucas Coutinho outlasted Pilot freshman Drew Davison in a third set super tiebreaker by a 10-7 margin for Idaho's lone point.
"Carlos played maybe his best match of the season to beat an experienced opponent," Gross added. "Drew showed some grit in nearly coming back from a first set loss to almost get it in the third."
Portland will have a quick turnaround and head north to take on the UC Davis Aggies in a neutral site match on Saturday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington campus. The match is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start.
"We have UC Davis tomorrow and I know it stung them for us to beat them in a super close match on their courts last season," Gross noted. "We are both slightly different teams than a year ago, but I'm sure it will be a battle."
