SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 48-ranked San Diego Toreros beat the Portland Pilots by a 4-0 margin on Sunday afternoon in West Coast Conference tennis action at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros improve to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Pilots fall to 6-7 and 1-2 in conference.

"I felt like we were very prepared and are reasonably healthy," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said, "but our tennis today was as bad as we have played in a couple of years. It was one of those days from top to bottom where no one could get going."

The Toreros pulled out a competitive doubles point with wins at the top two positions. No. 79-ranked Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren took a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot. Portland's Jamie Fisher and Carlos Donat evened the score with a 7-5 win against Alexandros Araouzos and David Norfeldt at No. 3, but the Pratt Keerasuntonpon and Nico Borter clinched with a 6-4 win at No. 2.

Gamerov, ranked No. 121 in singles, then made a 2-0 San Diego lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Pierre Garcia at No. 3 singles.

Araouzos knocked off Alex Wallace in straight sets at No. 5 and then Nico Borter clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Mathieu Garcia at No. 2.

In a matchup of nationally ranked opponents at the No. 1 position, No. 52 Michail Pervolarakis won the first set against No. 77 August Holmgren in a tiebreaker, but trailed 3-0 in the second when the match was called.

Pilot freshman Tom Hann won his first set at No. 6 against Keerasuntonpon, but trailed 2-1 in the third set at the conclusion of play. Junior Carlos Donat was down a set and trailing 2-1 at No. 4 to David Norfeldt.

Portland returns home next week and continues WCC play by hosting Santa Clara on Thursday and San Francisco on Saturday. Both matches will start at 11 a.m. at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. Live scoring and video coverage will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
