PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland posted a dominant 4-0 victory against the San Francisco Dons on Saturday in a West Coast Conference dual match at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots, who defeated Santa Clara on Thursday, improve to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in league play. The Dons fall to 6-12 and 2-2 in WCC matches.
"That was a nice win today to cap off a good home weekend," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "I don't think we played great doubles on either day, but it gave us a little buffer today. Our top three guys really took advantage of that early edge. Mike and Mathieu were super-efficient and solid as usual and Pierre did an amazing job of coming back from a set down and toughing out a victory to clinch it for us."
The Pilots won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to pick up the early point. Mathieu and Pierre Garcia provided the clincher with a 6-4 win at No. 1. Carlos Donat and Jamie Fisher had a comfortable 6-2 win at No. 3.
Portland's top three in the singles lineup then took care of business. Mathieu Garcia quickly dispatched Mert Zincirli in straight sets at No. 2. No. 52-ranked Michail Pervolarakis defeated Johan Joenhagen 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 to improve to 9-1 in dual matches this spring. Pierre Garcia then pulled out the 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win to clinch the match against Oliver Poysti at No. 3 singles.
Donat and Alex Fisher were each leading in their opening sets at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, when the match was clinched.
Portland hits the road next week for matches at Pepperdine and LMU. The Pilots visit the Waves on Friday at 2 p.m. and then take on the No. 43 Lions on Sunday at 11 a.m.
"I like our mindset right now," Gross said. "I feel as if we are a bit more in the moment and hopefully more prepared for the outdoor conditions this weekend then we were at San Diego. We will control what is controllable this week and hopefully put out a good effort next weekend in California."
