PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Pilots jumped out to an early lead, but the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunner scored six unanswered runs during the final three innings, including four in the top of the ninth, to rally past Portland and claim the series finale 10-8 on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Ryan Kim finished with three hits for the Pilots, Jace McKinney drove in three RBI's, and Dutton Elske scored three runs.
Â
Portland (4-7) scored three runs during both the second and third innings to hand their starter Camden Muller a comfortable lead. Kim scored the first run of the game when he trotted home on a wild pitch in the second inning, and Collin Runge sent an RBI double into the corner a few batters later to score Portland's second run. Chad Stevens then made it a 3-0 game with a run-scoring single.
Â
In the third, Elske collected an RBI with an infield single, and McKinney drove a ball into the left field corner that scored a pair to hand the home team a 6-0 edge.
Â
The Roadrunners (5-8) bounced back with a four-run fifth inning, with all four runs unearned, but the Pilots got two back in the bottom of the frame. McKinney tallied his third RBI of the day with a single in the fifth, and Matt Kelly pushed the Portland lead to 8-4 when he drew a bases-loaded walk.
Â
CSUB then climbed within two with two runs in the seventh inning before surging ahead with a four-run ninth. The tying run came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Alec Daily, and Andrew Penner gave the visitors their first lead of the game when he narrowly beat out the throw to first on a two-out infield single, which allowed two runners to score.
Â
Reliever Kyle King (1-2) then retired the Pilots in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win. King worked 4.2 innings out of the bullpen, holding the Pilots scoreless, while only yielding two hits. The Pilots got to starter Elijah Parks for six runs in just 2.2 innings, and reliever Isaiah Moten allowed two runs in an inning-and-a-third.
Â
Portland reliever Tate Budnick (0-1) takes the loss after working the final 2.2 innings. Muller lasted seven innings, and only two of the five runs he let in were earned. Jordan Horak faced two batters in relief, striking out one.
Â
The Pilots finished with 11 hits, with Elske, McKinney, and Stevens each producing two hits.
Â
Both teams committed three errors.
