CORVALLIS, Ore. --- After the Pilots evened the score with a three-run fifth inning, the No. 1 Oregon State Beavers scored two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to overcome Portland 6-3 on Tuesday night at Goss Stadium. Matt Kelly and Beau Brundage both had RBI doubles for the Pilots.
Â
Oregon State (13-0) began the game with a three-run bottom of the first inning, but the Pilots (4-8) responded by holding the top-ranked team in the country to only one hit and zero runs during the next five innings. Still within 3-0 in the top of the fifth, Kelly came to the plate with two outs and Tate Budnick on first base. Kelly then doubled into the gap in right-center field, which scored Budnick all the way from first.
Â
Brundage followed with a double of his own, driving a ball down the right field line that brought home the pinch runner Collin Runge and made it a one-run ballgame. A wild pitch and a passed ball later and the game was even as Brundage trotted home with the tying run.
Â
It remained 3-3 until the bottom of the seventh when Adley Rutschman handed the lead back to the Beavers with a two-run double. Andy Armstrong provided an insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth to help send the Beavers to the win.
Â
Jake Hawken started the game on the hill for the Pilots and pitched a perfect second inning after that three-run first. Connor Knutson (0-1) then took over, and he worked an efficient 4.2 innings of relief. Knutson struck out six and allowed only two runs on three hits. Jordan Horak and Connor White followed Knutson out of the bullpen.
Â
Oregon State used four pitchers on the night, with reliever Brandon Eisert (2-0) earning the win and Jake Mulholland claiming his fourth save of the year.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host UC Irvine in a four-game series at Joe Etzel Field, which begins with the opener at 6 p.m. on Friday night.
