LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Portland's Corbin Powers tossed 6.2 solid innings, Tate Budnick was clutch in relief, and Daniel Lopez and Cody Hawken provided the RBI's as the Pilots edged the Loyola Marymount Lions 2-1 in a West Coast Conference baseball game on Saturday night at Page Stadium. It's the second straight win over the Lions for the Pilots, who win their first series at LMU since 2011.
Â
Like Friday night, the Pilots (15-22, 8-9 WCC) received stellar starting pitching as Powers held the LMU (17-22, 10-7 WCC) bats silent for most of the night. Powers, a redshirt-senior left-hander, fanned eight before giving way to Budnick with two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh. Those two runners would be left stranded as Budnick came through by striking out LMU's lead-off hitter Niko Decolati to end the inning and the threat.
Â
Budnick, a senior righty who also catches for the Pilots, then retired the side in order in the eighth before the Lions got the potential tying run to third base with only one out in the bottom of the final inning. But Budnick remained calm, and he'd collect two huge strikeouts to end the game, giving him his first save of the year.
Â
Portland pitching has yielded only two runs to the Lions in the first two games of the three-game series as Powers (4-4) allowed just the one run on six hits. Freshman Eli Morse pitched a complete game on Friday night as the Pilots opened their stay in L.A. with a 6-1 win.
Â
Lopez and Hawken provided all the offense the Pilots would need as the pair both produced RBI doubles in the top of the fourth inning. Lopez's two-bagger brought home Beau Brundage with the game's first run, and Hawken switched places with Lopez with a double of his own, making the score 2-0.
Â
LMU got one back in the home half of the frame, but that's the only run the home team was able to score.
Â
The Lions, who entered the weekend tied for first place in the WCC, used two pitchers on the night, as starter Tyler Cohen (1-1) takes the loss. He was decent for 4.0 innings, allowing both runs on three hits, while striking out four. Reliever Nick Frasso fanned 11 in 5.0 scoreless innings.
Â
The Pilots and Lions next conclude the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
