PORTLAND, Ore. --- Junior forward Kimberly Hazlett scored two goals and sophomore midfielder Taryn Ries added a third as the Portland Pilots defeated the British Columbia Thunderbirds 3-1 in an exhibition match played on a balmy Friday evening at Merlo Field. The game was the first for head coach Michelle French, who took over the Portland program last December.
Hazlett's first goal came when she ran onto a nice ball played over the top by Ries in the 29th minute, which created a one-v-one opportunity. Hazlett took a touch to avoid the keeper before slotting one in to hand the Pilots a 1-0 lead.
UBC responded, and moments later the Thunderbirds leveled the score 1-1 when Alyssa Hunt finished with a header in the 32nd minute. Margaret Hadley sent in a well-hit cross from the left towards the top of the six, where Hunt did the rest.
The score remained 1-1 until Hazlett notched the brace early in the second half. This time she made her way through traffic and buried a shot from about 10 yards out inside the left post, handing the lead back to the Pilots.
Ries then pushed the advantage to 3-1 when she tucked away a strike from the spot after the Pilots were awarded a PK in the 79th minute.
The Pilots next open the regular season at home when they host Northern Arizona on Friday, Aug. 17. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Merlo Field.
