SEATTLE, Wash.--- The Portland Pilots volleyball team swept Seattle U in an exhibition match this Saturday afternoon, in Washington. The Pilots cruised through their first three sets, winning 25-10, 25-16, and 25-17.
The RedHawks then battled back to keep the following two sets close, but Portland ultimately closed out the afternoon with set scores of 25-22 and 15-10.
Redshirt sophomore Izzy Guzik, sophomore Liz Reich, and junior Shayla Hoeft each led the team with 13 kills a piece. Guzik recorded six kills in the fourth set alone to keep the Pilots from losing control of the match. Sophomore Carey Williams headed Portland's defensive efforts with 16 digs, while junior Cali Thompson produced 41 assists.
Despite the five set sweep, Seattle was competitive in each set, testing the Pilots fortitude throughout the match, but the Pilots were able to hold on every time. In the third set, Portland had a six point run to finish the set and transform it from neck and neck (19-17) to an easy set win (25-17). The team quelled a Seattle comeback in the fourth set by holding the lead through the entire 25 points.
The Pilots officially start their season against CSU Bakersfield on August 24th, in San Diego, Calif., at 2:00 pm. The match will be their first of the Aztec Invitational, as Portland will also play Campbell and San Diego State that weekend, respectively.Â
