Box Score BOISE, Idaho --- The Portland Pilots volleyball team earned their 10th straight win by sweeping the Sacramento State Hornets 3-0 to open competition at the Boise State Classic at Bronco Gym on Friday. With set scores of 25-16, 25-23, and 25-18, the Pilots extended their best start in program history, now 10-0 on the season, and have tied the longest winning streak in program history.
"The team did a nice job making some in-game adjustments against a very scrappy Sac State team," head coach Jeff Baxter said after the match. "We are excited for the challenge Boise State presents us."
Junior Cali Thompson recorded her third straight double-double for Portland, having 32 assists and 11 digs. Senior Reghan Pukis led the Pilots in kills with 13, and redshirt-sophomore Izzy Guzik had 10 kills and six digs.
The first set began with the Pilots surging to a 7-3 lead, which was fueled by kills from Guzik, Pukis, and Shayla Hoeft. Portland's advantage would grow from there, but the Hornets (5-6) did momentarily pull within five points at 14-9. The Pilots responded, and kills from Liz Reich and Guzik soon had the lead back to nine. Thompson would seal the set for Portland providing the final two points with a kill and an ace.
Sacramento State looked to recover in the second set, coming out strong to exchange points with the Pilots. Trailing 14-13, the Pilots countered with a 3-0 run to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Katie Barker and Guzik collected kills during the outburst, but Sacramento State was still able to tie the set moments later at 23-23. An attacking error for the Hornets and kill from Guzik then handed the second set and a 2-0 lead to the Pilots.
Seeking their sixth sweep of the season, the Pilots carried their momentum into the third set to push their lead to 12-6 early. Pukis continued to attack at the net, and consecutive kills from her gave the Pilots a commanding 21-15 edge. Guzik would then provide the set-clinching kill, and the Pilots had their 10th straight W.
The Pilots will continue their weekend action this Friday evening against the Boise State Broncos at 6:30 PM (Pacific) in the Bronco Gym.
