BOISE, IDAHO – The Portland Pilots have won their fourth tournament in a row and remain undefeated at 12-0, finishing the Boise State Classic by defeating CSUN. The Pilots would win the match in four sets over the Matadors, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, and 25-18.
Junior Cali Thompson was nominated the Co-MVP of the Boise State Classic, while senior Reghan Pukis and junior Shayla Hoeft were nominated along with Thompson to the All-Tournament Team.
The Pilots (12-0) are one of seven remaining undefeated teams in the nation, and head into West Coast Conference play undefeated for the first time in program history. The Matadors of CSUN fell to 4-8 overall with the loss.
"I'm excited about the progress we have made these last few weeks," head coach Jeff Baxter said after the match. "I'm looking forward to making more upgrades at practice this week."
Shayla Hoeft led the Pilots in kills with 14, and had five blocks along with it. Redshirt-sophomore Izzy Guzik recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs, and Cali Thompson had 41 assists and seven digs.
The Pilots came out strong in the first set, opening the match on a 7-0 run to grab hold of the lead at 9-3. The Matadors would go on multiple runs to keep the set competitive, but the Pilots would come out on top, taking the first set 25-20.
The second set was as back and forth as could be, with both teams exchanging the lead throughout and struggling to get past one another. The Matadors would take a slim lead in the middle of the set and extend it to 22-17, and despite a Pilot comeback to make it 24-23, the Matadors would close it out to win the second set 25-23.
With the momentum up for grabs in the third set, the Pilots took a hold of it and ran out to a 15-7 lead. CSUN was unable to overcome the Pilots wave, as the Pilots would go on to win the set, 25-16.
Both teams would come out in the fourth set fighting and scrapping for the lead. As the dust started to settle, the Pilots would go on a 3-0 run and finally attain the lead at 13-12. The Matadors wouldn't let the Pilots off easily, coming back and making runs multiple times. However, the Pilots would end the fifth set on a 15-7 run, and would finish off the Matadors to the score of 25-18.
The Pilots will begin West Coast Conference play next weekend, hosting Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on Sept 20. and 22 in the Chiles Center.
