PORTLAND, Ore. --- Gio Magana-Rivera and Rey Ortiz each found the back of the net and the Pilots held a lopsided edge in shots, but in the end No. 20 Portland and the American Eagles settled for a 2-2 draw in a men's soccer non-conference game played on Sunday night at Merlo Field. The Pilots out-shot the Eagles 34-9, and Portland remains unbeaten on the year at 5-0-2.
Â
"I'm very proud of our program this weekend," said head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt, whose Pilots shutout No. 9 Washington on Friday night. "Tonight we deserved more out of the game with enough opportunities and scoring chances created. Soccer is a cruel game sometimes and we were on the wrong end of a few bounces. We learned a lot about ourselves and took positive steps forward this weekend. We are a confident group that will recover and prepare for a very good Oregon State this upcoming Friday at Merlo."
Portland peppered the American frame during the game's opening moments as they had five shots in the first 15 minutes. Greg Tracey had a pair of hits saved, and AU keeper Lucas Manso also denied an attempt off the foot of Benji Michel in the 12th minute.
Â
Despite the Pilots controlling the pace of play, it was the Eagles (1-3-2) who deposited game's first goal into the back of the net in the 17th minute after a nice build-up. Fabio Massaro found Nicholas Dimitrijevic with a pass, and Dimitrijevic helped it along to Jerry Zouantcha. Zouantcha then provided a composed finish to hand the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Â
From there the Pilots continued to create quality opportunities as Esteban Calvo sent a decent header wide, and Michel hit one that appeared destined for the top shelf in the 21st minute. But Manso made a stellar save to redirect the shot over the crossbar.
Â
The Pilots had the apparent equalizer waved off because of an offside call in the 31st minute, and Malcolm Dixon struck one towards the frame from point-blank range late in the first half. But a perfectly positioned defender denied the shot, knocking it down right at the goal line.
Â
Still trailing 1-0 in the second half, Michel earned a penalty for the Pilots after he drew a foul inside the 18-yard box. Ortiz then stepped to the spot and buried the attempt, leveling the score with his third goal of the year.
Â
The Pilots caught a break in the 66th minute when Zouantcha was shown his second yellow of the match, meaning Portland would play with a man-advantage for the rest of the nigh. Ortiz nearly provided the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute when he hammered a shot on-target from 22 yards out, but Manso was there with the save to preserve the 1-1 tie.
Â
Then in the 82nd minute, Brenner Jarrad momentarily gave the Eagles the lead with a free kick that found the left corner of the net from just outside the area.
Â
Magana-Rivera provided an immediate response with a world class goal less than a minute later. An American clearance only reached the top of the box, and Magana-Rivera was there to drill a shot into the upper right corner of the net, out of the reach of Manso. It's the first goal of the season for Magana-Rivera, and it would send the two teams to overtime, notched at 2-2.
Â
The Pilots attempted all six shots in the first overtime, but the Eagles were able to force a second overtime. Portland again dominated possession during the final 10 minutes, and Jason Manning nearly produced the game-winner in the closing seconds, but his attempt on a header was high from six yards out.
Â
The Pilots next remain at home to host the Oregon State Beavers on Friday night at Merlo Field. Kickoff for the two in-state rivals is set for 7 p.m.
