PROVO, Utah --- After a scoreless first half the Brigham Young Cougars scored three times after the break to claim a 3-0 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Saturday night at South Field. The loss ends the Pilots' four-game winning streak.
Â
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, but Portland's (8-5-0, 1-1-0 WCC) Taryn Ries had a decent chance in the 10th minute. She put a well-struck shot on target, but it was saved as the game remained 0-0.
Â
The Cougars (7-3-1, 2-0-0 WCC) also had some chances in the first half, but Portland goalkeeper Rachel Lusby provided some solid saves to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Lusby continued her solid play in the second half, but BYU jumped ahead 1-0 when they scored in the 55th minute after Elise Flake planted a shot into the top right corner of the frame. Danika Serassio earned the assist.
Â
Lusby continued to produce a handful of stellar saves to keep the Pilots within a goal, and Julia Guthner nearly leveled the score in the 74th minute. She received a pass inside the 18-yard box, but her hit was wide of the right post.
Â
BYU then scored a goal in the 77th minute on a strike that hit the left post before going in, and they made it 3-0 in the 80th minute when Cameron Tucker put away a rebound after a phenomenal save by Lusby.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host Saint Mary's in a West Coast Conference match on Friday night at Merlo Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
