PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Larkin Russell collected two assists and Rachel Khaw and Taryn Ries each found the back of the net as the Pilots topped the Utah Valley Wolverines 2-1 at the Nike Portland Invitational on Friday night at Merlo Field. It's the first career goal for Khaw, while Ries records her second career game-winner.
Â
Khaw's goal came in the 69th minute after the Wolverines had taken the lead early in the second half. Russell had possession near the top of the box before playing a through ball to Khaw, who made perfectly timed run. Khaw then took a touch before slotting the ball into the net to level the score 1-1.
Â
The score remained tied until the 82nd minute, when Russell again set up a Portland goal. This time she pressured the center back and stripped the ball at the top of the 18, before taking a touch wide to avoid the UVU keeper Brooklyn Nielsen. She then found an unmarked Ries in front of the goal, and the sophomore forward easily finished to hand the home side the lead.
Â
It was a lead they'd hold onto as the Pilots even their record at 3-3-0 on the year. Utah Valley drops to 1-5-1.
Â
The Pilots dominated possession for most of the night and had a handful of chances early in the first half. Hanna Armendariz drove a well-hit shot towards the frame that was saved in the sixth minute, and she then rattled the right post with the ball moments later. Khaw also had a shot denied by Nielsen in the 31st minute as the two sides would enter the locker room at half tied 0-0.
Â
The Wolverines then surged ahead when Sadie Brockbank scored a world class goal in the 47th minute. From about 25 yards out, she found the upper right corner of the frame with a brilliant strike to make it a 1-0 game.
Â
Goalkeeper Rachel Lusby was solid for the Pilots, producing four saves. In the 16th minute she made perhaps the stop of the night with a good reaction save on a shot off the foot of Madeline Moore from 15 out.
Â
Nielsen made three saves as the Pilots out-shot the Wolverines 11-7.
Â
The Nike Portland Invitational continues on Sunday when the Pilots host the UC Irvine Anteaters at 1:30 p.m. The tournament began on Friday with Washington defeating UCI 2-1 in double overtime.
