PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland sophomore guard Marcus Shaver Jr. scored a career-high 25 points, but the Pacific Tigers pulled out a 65-57 victory Saturday night in the West Coast Conference home opener at the Chiles Center for the Pilots. The Tigers improved to 11-8 overall and 1-3 in WCC play, while the Pilots fell to 7-11 and 0-3 in league games.
Lafayette Dorsey had 21 for Pacific and Jahlil Tripp added a double-double 17 points and 11 rebounds, including 11 in the second half.
Shaver Jr. was an efficient 9-of-12 from the field and 4-of-5 from three point range. He made all three of his free throw attempts and added four rebounds and three assists in 31 minutes of action, but the rest of the Pilots struggled to a combined 11-for-35 from the field.
Pacific led by as much as 16 points late in the first half, but Shaver Jr. capped a 9-0 run with a three-pointer before the halftime buzzer to make it a 34-27 deficit.
The Pilots cut the deficit to 42-40 after a pair of Shaver Jr. free throws, but Tripp scored seven straight points during a 13-5 run to push the margin back to double digits.
Down 14 with 3:14 remaining, the Pilots made one more rally to cut it to 62-57 on another triple by Shaver Jr. with 14 seconds left, but that would be the closest Portland would get.
The Pilots made just 10-of-19 free throws in the game and had 14 turnovers, compared to 10 for Pacific. Portland shot 43 percent overall and held the Tigers to 42 percent from the field, but the Tigers were 8-for-18 from three-point range and made 13-of-20 free throws to secure the win.
Portland continues its three-game WCC homestand on Thursday when the San Diego Toreros visit for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Pilots then take on No. 5 Gonzaga in a sold-out game on Saturday at 7 p.m. That contest will be televised live on ROOT Sports Northwest.
