PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland sophomore guard Marcus Shaver Jr. recorded his second straight game with 20 or more points, but the Pilots struggled offensively and fell dropped a 76-55 decision to the San Diego Toreros on Thursday night in West Coast Conference men's basketball action at the Chiles Center.
Shaver Jr. finished with 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting and dished out four assists, but the Pilots (7-12, 0-4 WCC) as a team shot a season-low 31 percent overall.
After falling behind by 21 points midway through the first half, Shaver Jr. brought the Pilots back with flurry at the end of the period. He finished with 12 points in the half and fed Theo Akwuba for a pair of baskets, including a buzzer-beating dunk to ignite the home crowd and make it a 38-28 deficit at the break.
Portland got within 40-32 after a pair of free throws and runner in the lane by sophomore guard JoJo Walker early in the second half, but San Diego then rattled off an 18-0 run as the Toreros would lead by as much as 29 points late.
The Pilots forced 19 turnovers and committed 15, but San Diego gained a 25-11 edge in points off of turnovers. The Toreros controlled the glass with a 46-30 rebounding margin.
Jose Martinez led four San Diego players in double figures with 15 points off the bench, while Isaiah Pineiro added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Pilots conclude their three-game WCC homestand when the No. 5 Gonzaga Bulldogs visit for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Saturday night. That game is sold out, but will be televised on ROOT Sports Northwest.
