SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – San Francisco shot lights out in the first half and raced to an 83-61 victory over Portland Thursday night in West Coast Conference basketball action at War Memorial Gymnasium at the Sobrato Center.
The Dons (17-3, 5-1 WCC) improve to 11-1 at home, with the lone loss coming against No. 4 Gonzaga, while the Pilots (7-14, 0-6) have lost seven straight.
Marcus Shaver Jr. scored a team-high 13 points for the Pilots, while Jacob Tryon added 11 points and a season-high nine rebounds off the bench. Freshman Miles Turner also recorded his first career points late in the regulation.
Matt McCarthy recorded a career- best 20 points off the bench, while Frankie Ferrari added 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
San Francisco built an early lead and never looked back as McCarthey had 12 first-half points and the Dons shot 61 percent in the period. Shaver Jr. had 10 in the period, but the rest of the Pilots struggled as the team was 9-for-31 from the field and trailed 42-21 at the half.
The margin grew to as much as 30 points early in the second half as USF shot 55 percent overall for the game, while Portland finished at 42 percent from the field. The Dons made 11-of-25 three-pointers compared to 3-of-14 for the Pilots.
Portland will remain in Northern California and take on the Pacific Tigers on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the WCC Game of the Week. The contest will be televised in the Pacific Northwest on ROOT Sports Northwest.
