The Portland men's tennis team continues its dual schedule with a pair of tough opponents this weekend. The Pilots and Nevada will face off on Friday morning in Eugene at the Student Tennis Center on the University of Oregon campus, and then Portland will return to the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center to host West Coast Conference favorite San Diego on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The Pilots (1-3) have played a number of veteran teams close early in the season, despite missing senior Carlos Donat in all four matches due to injury. Playing a lineup of five freshmen and a sophomore, Portland dropped a pair of 4-3 decisions to Big Sky favorite Northern Arizona and at UNLV last weekend.
Portland has a sweep over Portland State and a 6-1 loss at Washington also on the ledger.
"Strangely enough even though we suffered two 4-3 defeats last weekend I feel more confident and I think the players are as confident as ever right now," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We made a few adjustments to our doubles this week so hopefully that will show up on the scoreboard and make our lives easier. I think we learned a lot about the competitiveness of this group in those very close matches last weekend."
Nevada enters Friday with a 2-1 record, including a road win over Pacific and a close, 4-3 loss at UC Davis. The Pilots last met the Wolf Pack during the 2016-17 season in Seattle and won by a 4-3 margin.
San Diego is the league-favorite and has advanced to the NCAA Championships each of the last five seasons.
"It's not any easier this weekend," Gross noted. "We have had a couple of narrow victories over Nevada the last couple of years with an experienced team. This will be a similar challenge as last weekend. San Diego was picked as the best team in our conference coming into the season, and that is for good reason. They are a very good team. It will be nice to play them at home. We will continue to do the best we can to focus on the process of getting better each match and hope the results will turn our way as we go."
