MORAGA, Calif. --- After Portland's Taryn Ries had given the Pilots the lead with a goal in in the 88th minute, the Saint Mary's Gaels tallied the equalizer with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation as the two sides played to a 1-1 draw in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium.
The goal is the fourth of the season for Ries, and it came on a nice pass from Hazlett. Ries received the pass inside the 18 and had only the keeper in front of her. The junior forward then buried a shot into the top left corner of the net as the Pilots (4-4-3, 0-2-1 WCC) seemingly had the win in sight.
But the Gaels (6-6-1, 0-2-1 WCC) came through with the tying goal when they capitalized on a corner kick in the 90th minute. Kaytlin Brinkman sent in the corner, and Paris Fox somehow found the back of the net, leveling the score and sending the match to overtime.
Hazlett began the extra time by dragging a shot wide, and in the closing seconds Ries hit one high from point blank range as the game continued.
Both teams searched for the game-winner during the second 10-minute overtime, and Hazlett had a shot saved in the 110th minute as the match ended 1-1.
The Pilots controlled possession for much of the first half, and they out-shot the Gaels 8-2 during the opening 45 minutes. Natalie Muth nearly gave the Pilots and early lead when she hit the crossbar from about 30 yards out on a free kick in the sixth minute.
The Pilots continued to create opportunities, and in the 16th minute Ries sent a header just wide of the right post on a nice ball played in from the left wing. In the 36th minute, Portland had a couple of chances, including when they had another shot hit the woodwork. This one was off the foot of Ries.
Just before the break, Rachel Khaw connected with Russell with the short pass at the top of the six. Russell had just the keeper to beat, but she hit a shot high as the game remained scoreless.
Ries opened the second half by going near post with a shot that was saved by the SMC keeper, Maleah Miner. From there the Pilots repeatedly had quality chances in the attacking half of the field, including in the 75th minute when Brianna Miyama played a stellar ball into the area. MJ Roe was there with a header, but the attempt was high of the bar.
The Pilots now return home to host the Santa Clara Broncos next Saturday at Merlo Field, with kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
