Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots volleyball team fell to Santa Clara in five sets this Saturday at the Leavey Center. The Pilots lost with set scores of 25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 9-15.
Senior Shayla Hoeft and juniors Liz Reich & Kassidy Naone all had at 14 or more kills. Junior Kellie Hughes recorded her fourth double-double of 2019, posting 39 assists and 15 digs.
Portland (10-9, 2-6 WCC) came out in front early in the first set, gaining a 7-3 lead thanks to two service aces from junior Carey Williams. The Broncos (14-7, 4-4 WCC) rallied late to make it 21-20, but Naone's fourth kill of the set capped a 4-0 Portland run, the Pilots winning the first at 25-20.
The Pilots struggled to separate themselves in the second set initially, but a 5-0 run gave them some distance at 14-11. Another 5-0 run later in the set pushed their lead to 24-17, the Pilots taking the second set eventually at 25-20.
Down 0-2 in set scores, the Broncos found their way in the third set: with the score tied at 3-3, a 7-3 run gave the Broncos the lead, a lead they held the rest of the way. Santa Clara went on to take the third set at 25-19.
Santa Clara rode their momentum into the fourth, going on an 8-3 run to reclaim the lead at 12-10. Portland cut their deficit to 21-17, but were unable to complete the rally, falling in the fourth at 25-19.
Going into the fifth and final set, the Broncos came out on a 6-2 run to force an early Pilot timeout. They stayed out in front the remainder of the way, taking the final set and the match at 15-9.
The Pilots will return home next week, hosting Gonzaga on October 26
th at the Chiles Center.
