PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Jacobo Reyes scored a goal and added an assist and Greg Tracey claims the game-winner as the Pilots defeated the California Golden Bears 2-1 in a non-conference men's soccer match played on Tuesday night at Merlo Field. It's the third goal of the season for Reyes, and it's the first for Tracey.
Â
"Tonight was a total team performance where we had different players step up to beat a very talented Pac-12 team," said Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt. "Cal is a very well coached team and it was exciting to play a pure game tonight, which is good for the growth of men's college soccer."
Reyes gave the Pilots the early 1-0 lead when he buried one from distance in the 12th minute. After the Pilots (6-5-1) had earned a free kick, Reyes stepped up and bent it inside the top right corner of the frame, 21 yards out. The freshman hit it just right, and it was out of the reach of a diving Drake Callender, the Cal keeper.
Â
It was still 1-0 in the 48th minute when the Pilots pushed their edge to two goals. This time it was an excellent build up as Reyes connected with Ben Ortiz with a pass inside the right side of the 18-yard box. Ortiz then provided a first-time cross, and Tracey did well to get a touch on it to send it past the keeper.
Â
The Bears (6-4-2) pulled one back in the 69th minute as Francisco Perez scored an impressive goal, with the shot coming from outside the area. Perez gained possession, took a couple of touches, and hit a well-struck shot inside the left post.
Â
From there the Pilots were solid on defense, while continuing to create chances in the final third of the field. Reyes nearly finished on another free kick in the 80th minute, with this one coming a little farther out than his first. The attempt was wide as the game remained 2-1. Moments later Tracey hammered one towards the frame, but it was high.
Â
In the end, the Pilots held the Bears to only six shots, and goalkeeper Josh Lagudah needed to make just one save to preserve the win.
"I was incredibly proud of every member of my team committing to the collective goal of our group," continued Carlin-Voigt. "Jabari Newton continued to prepare himself all season and tonight it showed as he played like an experienced senior when his opportunity was presented. I couldn't be more proud of him.
Â
"However tonight was more than just about playing a game. Today our UP campus mourned the loss of Owen and we decided as a team to play to honor his legacy. During this incredibly difficult time, we are playing for a purpose much larger than ourselves."

The Pilots next remain at home to host the Santa Clara Broncos in a West Coast Conference match on Saturday evening. Kickoff at Merlo Field is set for 4:30 p.m.
