PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland freshmen Delentz Pierre and Kevin Ogudugu both found the back of the net and goalkeeper Nico Campuzano recorded the shutout as the Pilots blanked the Santa Clara Broncos 2-0 in a West Coast Conference men's soccer match played on Saturday evening at Merlo Field. Pierre claims the game-winner, his first, and Campuzano notches his third clean sheet on the year.
Â
Portland's (7-5-1, 1-2-0 WCC) first goal came off a set piece in the 30th minute after Rey Ortiz earned a corner kick with a shot that was deflected out. Ortiz then went near post with the corner, and Pierre elevated and sent a well-placed header into the far side of the net. It's Pierre's second goal this fall, and it gave the home side a one-nil lead.
Â
The Pilots held the Broncos to just one shot during the first half, and Jacobo Reyes nearly scored twice for Portland. In the 11th minute Ortiz whipped in a quality service, and Reyes was there to provide the header, but SCU's Guillem Badenes Mecho was there for the save
Â
In the 18th minute Reyes tried to go top shelf with a solid strike from the top of the 18, but again Badenes Mecho recorded the stop, which at the time kept game scoreless.
Â
After Nico Campuzano made a couple of saves early in the second half to preserve the Portland's lead, Ogudugu scored his first goal of the season on a brilliant ball played by R.J. Stretch. Stretch, an outside back, gained possession for the Pilots, worked his way up field, and sent a ball up field that Ogudugu ran onto. Ogudugu then scored with a composed finish, beating the keeper to make it a 2-0 game.
Â
From there the Pilots stayed solid on defense and Campuzano provided a few more stops to close out the win.
Â
Campuzano finished with five saves against the Broncos (7-5-1, 1-2-0 WCC) to help the Pilots collect their fifth shutout of the season.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a visit by the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Wednesday night. Kickoff for the WCC contest is set for 7 p.m. at Merlo Field.
