LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots finished their first WCC road trip of the season, facing the Loyola Marymount Lions. The Lions won with set scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-21.
Freshman Jayde Harris and junior Liz Reich each led the Pilots (8-7, 0-4 WCC) in kills with eight, with Harris throwing in four digs and Reich having two total blocks. Senior Katie Barker had seven kills and one total block, while junior Kellie Hughes had 24 assists and six digs.
As the first set unfolded, the Pilots took an early lead over the Lions (10-7, WCC 4-1) at 6-5. Despite Portland tying the score at 11-11, LMU went on a 5-0 run to push their lead to 16-11. A late Pilot rally, featuring a 6-3 Portland run with two kills from Reich, would cut the score to 24-21, but wasn't enough LMU took the set with the next point, the set score 25-21 Lions.
LMU came out hot once again, starting the second set with a 9-2 run. Portland refused to be pushed around, going on a 12-5 run to cut their deficit to 20-22: Harris & Barker came up clutch, securing four and three kills, respectively. The Lions would finish the set on a 3-0 run, taking the second at 25-20.
In the third set, Portland jumped out ahead of LMU to secure the early lead at 3-1. With the Pilots up 9-8, the Lions answered with a 4-0 run and forced an early Portland timeout. Though Portland would continue to battle, LMU went on to take the third and final set of the match at 25-21.
The Pilots return to home next week, for matches against Pacific and Saint Mary's at the Chiles Center.
