PORTLAND, Ore – University of Portland men's basketball announced the signing of Zac Triplett (Maribyrnong College/Melbourne, Australia) to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, head coach Terry Porter announced. Triplett will join the Pilots as a freshman for the 2020-21 season.
The 6-foot-5, 165-pound sharp-shooter has been a member of the represented Victoria on state teams at the Under-18 and Under-20 Australian National Championships.
"Zac is a skilled guard that has a passion for the game," Porter said. "He has competed at a high level in Australia and already possesses an elite skill with his ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter. He has a strong all-around game that will only get better as he gets stronger. Additionally, Zac will be a great fit for our campus, community and program culture."
"I chose Portland because it is a very nice school in a highly competitive conference," Triplett said. "The campus and city of Portland is a nice location and similar to home. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to learn and develop my game, while getting a great education and a great school."
He helped Victoria win the Gold Medal at the 2019 School Sport Australia (SSA) National Championships in the U-18 division. The previous year, he earned All-Australian Team honors at the SSA National Championships.
Triplett also led Maribyrnong to a Bronze Medal at the 2018 Australia School Championships for the Under-20, Division I level.
His recruitment picked up when Triplett attended the NCAA's College Basketball Academy in Houston last summer and was a part of the Aussie Prospects team that competed in the AAU circuit.
Triplett plays club ball for the Keilor Thunder and led the team to the 2016 National Junior Classic Championship.
Portland has two graduate transfers on the 2019-20 roster, but no true seniors. The Pilots are off to a 2-1 start to the season and will host Maine on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Chiles Center.
