PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots fought hard in three sets with the Pepperdine Waves at the Chiles Center on Saturday afternoon. The Waves won the match in three sets, with set scores of 25-14, 26-24 and 25-20.
Junior Liz Reich provided the firepower on offense, notching 15 kills. Junior Kellie Hughes recorded her fifth double-double of the season (28 assists, 13 digs), while Senior Shayla Hoeft recorded seven kills & two blocks.
The match began as a close affair, until a 5-2 run gave the Waves (13-10, WCC 9-3) a slim lead in the first set at 11-7. Portland (11-11, WCC 3-8) struggled to establish momentum, despite four kills from Reich throughout the set. Pepperdine went on to take the first set at 25-14.
The second set began almost the same as the first, with the Waves establishing an early lead. The Pilots rallied back this time, tying the set at 12-12 thanks to a 4-0 run thanks to kills from junior Kassidy Naone & sophomore Claire Forrest. Both teams continued to battle late, with Portland taking the lead at 23-22 from an ace from senior Emma Scanlan. Down 24-23, the Waves rallied with a 3-0 run to take the second set at 26-24.
Once again, both squads continued to battle early, not allowing their opponent to take a drastic lead. Portland made their move down 10-7, going on a 3-0 run thanks to a kill and block from Forrest to tie the score at 10-10. The Waves responded with a 4-0 run, and didn't look back as they went on to take the third set at 25-20.
Portland returns to the road next week, facing Saint Mary's on Nov. 7th & Pacific on Nov. 9
